BRUSSELS: Thousands of workers have demonstrated in front of European Union headquarters to demand more work and guarantees for social security. The march drew at least 20,000. They say that multinationals corporations are firing people to drive up profits and closing factories without much warning.
At the head of Friday's march was a delegation from the Opel factory in Antwerp, which is slated to be closed this year as part of a General Motors Co. plan to cut 8,300 jobs in Europe.
The demonstrators also eyed the world's biggest brewer, Anheuser-Busch InBev SA, which was planning to cut almost 300 jobs in Belgium before union pressure made the company change its mind last week.
